Lasse Jenssen – Instrumentation 2.0: “Performance is a feature”
Performance does not happen by accident. Performance is a feature which must be implemented into your application. This presentation will look at how you can instrument your code using Oracle End-to-end metrics. From database version 12c Oracle gives you even more choices, and introduces some new tags, for instance ECID and DBOP. In this presentation we’ll explore how we can use these tags together with the MONITOR hint, the dbms_monitor package and the v$sql_monitor view. Instrumenting your application can easily become the key feature for achieving performance.

Donatello Settembrino – Hash Join Memory Optimization
HASH JOIN is one of the two most common methods used by the Oracle engine to resolve Join operation between two tables. The Oracle optimizer has different (not one) access options to solve a HASH JOIN, which is the most performing one from a PGA consumption point of view? The purpose of the presentation is to illustrate the various possible trees used to solve a HASH JOIN and the impact that each of them involves on the consumption of PGA. Some examples will be illustrated on how to correct those situations when the optimizer is misled or downwards estimate the PGA allocation needed to optimize accesses to join operations.

Gianni Ceresa – Graph Database: from scratch in 45 minutes
You often hear theoretical talks about Graph Databases, either with just theory or with some potential use cases. But how to do it for real? How to practically get started with Graph Databases?
This session is going to show you “live” how you can practically get started with Oracle Graph Databases, by going from a sample dataset to creating and loading a graph, to doing analysis on it to get insights into it.
All you need to get started with graph databases by yourself with confidence right after the session.

Geertjan Wielenga – Visualizing and Analyzing Data with Oracle JET
Oracle JavaScript Extension Toolkit (Oracle JET) is Oracle’s free and open source JavaScript toolbox that provides everything you need to quickly and efficiently create dashboards for visualizing and analyzing big data. In this session, you will be introduced to Oracle JET and you’ll see live demos that show you from scratch how to use it to quickly visualize data in your JavaScript applications.

Joel Acha – Near Real Time Data Warehousing – The Next Frontier
Businesses are looking at Analytics as a means of gaining competitive advantage. With the advent of exponentially larger data volumes in conjunction with the increased variety of data sources, there has never been a greater need to provide the ability to access this wealth of information in a timely fashion in order to have an impact on the way these businesses operate and improving operational efficiencies. A number of real time data integration products provide end-to-end automation which quickens the time to market of these solutions within an agile development framework.
The aim of this paper is to provide a high level overview of the need for near real time data warehousing. The paper also aims to debunk the “Data Warehousing is dead” myth.

Christian Berg – Francesco Tisiot – Starting an Oracle Analytics Cloud Journey from 0
Even though cloud solutions are become more pervasive and common, taking the initial step and actually going to the cloud with your analytical solution can seem like a hurdle.
How to get started? What product to choose? Where to get the data from? How to secure things and take them beyond just a personal playground?
This session will lead you through the process of getting started with your Oracle Analytics Cloud solution. You will learn about the options and possibilities of all the current product offerings and be able to have a fully working setup of your own.

Michael Rainey – Continuous Data Replication into Cloud Storage with Oracle GoldenGate

Continuous flow. Streaming. Near real-time. These are all terms used to identify the business’s need for quick access to data. It’s a common request, even if the data must flow from on-premises to the cloud. Oracle GoldenGate is the data replication solution built for fast data. In this session, we’ll look at how GoldenGate can be configured to extract transactions from the Oracle database and load them into a cloud object store, such as Amazon S3. There are many different use cases for this type of continuous load of data into the cloud. We’ll explore these solutions and the various tools that can be used to access and analyze the data from the cloud object store, leaving attendees with ideas for implementing a full source-to-cloud data replication solution.

Kent Graziano – Making Sense of Schema-On-Read

With the increasing prevalence of semi-structured data from IoT devices, web logs, and other sources, data architects and modelers have to learn how to interpret and project data from things like JSON. While the concept of loading data without upfront modeling is appealing to many, ultimately, in order to make sense of the data and use it to drive business value, we have to turn that schema-on-read data into a real schema! That means data modeling! In this session I will walk through both simple and complex JSON documents, decompose them, then turn them into a representative data model using Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler. I will show you how they might look using both traditional 3NF and data vault styles of modeling.

1. See what a JSON document looks like
2. Understand how to read it
3. Learn how to convert it to a standard data model

Gregg Christman – Top 10 Database Compression Insights – What You Need to Know

Join Oracle Database Performance Product Management to discuss the top 10 insights (maybe more) about Oracle compression. The top 10 insights includes best practices, tips and tricks, how other organizations use compression or compression insights that you need to know. The database compression areas covered include Data Compression (Advanced Row and Hybrid Columnar), Index Compression (Advanced Index and Prefix), LOB Compression (Advanced LOB), Automating Compression (Automatic Data Optimization) and Backup Compression (RMAN). This session is the perfect opportunity to get your database compression questions answered.

Heli Helskyaho – Real life use cases for Machine Learning

Machine Learning is used ”everywhere”. In this presentation we will see some examples of machine learning used in real life. For example how does Facebook use ML, what business areas could take advantage of chatbots and how can Oracle SQL Developer be used to find the potential customers.

Heli Helskyaho – The basics of Machine Learning

What is machine learning, and why should I care? This session covers the basic concepts of machine learning: features, instances, binary classification, scoring and ranking, and more. Various models are used in machine learning: logical, geometrical, grouping, probabilistic models, and model ensembles. The presentation discusses those models and touches on concept learning and tree, rule, linear, distance-based, and probabilistic models. After covering the basics of the models used in machine learning, it addresses experiments in machine learning: what to measure, how to measure, and how to interpret the results.

Connor McDonald – The latest and greatest features

The upgrade clock is ticking, and most IT professionals are facing the task of moving to 12c Release 2, 18c or 19c in the near future. And whilst the major technical changes of multi-tenant, sharding and of course cloud, have grabbed all of the attention, there are still hundreds of other useful new features in the latest versions of the Oracle database. This session will cover as many as possible in the time permitted.

Connor McDonald – The Fast Lane to Database Success – 25 years of tips and techniques

The skill set of a database professional is much more than what is read in the documentation, on blogs, or on StackOverflow. It is the knowledge from years of trial and error, experimentation, and sometimes painful failures. The problem with this is that takes time, a long, long time, to build that experience. This session aims to fast-track that path. I’ve spent 25 years with the Oracle database, so I’ll pass on my favourite hints, tips, features, and techniques picked up from the smartest people in the community.

Richard Martens – APEX 18.1: Using RESTfull services and remote SQL

Apex 18.x offers the “remote SQL” feature, a way to use RESTfull services straight from APEX. The presentation will show how to consume RESTfull servcies using HTTP(s), GET, PUT and POST, not only to ORDS (remote SQL) enabled services, but also to mySQL or Postgress databases.
